Managing the Cost of Corrosion

This paper reports on an evaluation of the cost of corrosion in oil and gas production and refining, based on an internal survey of a major integrated company and an evaluation of published data available throughout the industry.  Optimization of this cost is proposed through the development of an integrated, systematic risk-based corrosion management program  that uses key performance indicators to highlight  improvement opportunities.  An excellence model structure is used for continual improvement.  Essential elements of the program are discussed along with illustrations of the program's use in problem resolution.
